Fitness Fun for the Whole Family
Saturday, September 27 is Family Health and Fitness Day, a special observance dedicated to promoting family involvement in physical activities to develop a healthy lifestyle. Harbin Clinic’s HarbinSTRONG program and Vitality Fitness Center offer the following suggestions for ways to have fun with your family while also getting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat!
Take a walk after a meal. Avoid the urge to nap after a big meal, and make it a priority to take a stroll around the neighborhood with your family to get active and walk off those calories! In addition to reducing stress, walking helps aid digestion and increases your metabolism.
Go for a bike ride. Biking is a fun way to exercise while spending quality time together. Plus, there’s the added benefit of getting a great leg workout with low impact on your joints. Ridge Ferry Park in Rome, Dellinger Park in Cartersville, and the lengthy Silver Comet Trail outside of Atlanta are perfect locales for biking with the whole family.
Hit the trails. With summer temperatures cooling off, now is a great time to go on a nature hike with your family. Hiking is perfect for building muscle and burning calories while learning about the great outdoors. Head over to Berry College in Rome or Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville to check out some of north Georgia’s most scenic and serene trails.
Play an active game. Classic games like Tag, Capture the Flag, Four Square, and Hopscotch are fun at any age! Running and jumping are excellent cardio activities that increase your heart rate and release endorphins, chemicals that promote feelings of happiness and positivity.
Jump in a leaf pile. Of course, you have to rake the leaves first! Raking is an aerobic activity that tones the arm muscles, but it is easy enough for even young family members to do (with the correct size rake, of course). Make it a competition and see who can rake up the largest pile of leaves, and then have fun jumping in it over and over!
